It is 1988, and an obscure scientist, Lucas Hutchman, has made a momentous discovery. He can build a neutron resonator: a device which, once triggered, will detonate every nuclear warhead in the planet. Immaginate di aver costruito un apparecchio (sul tipo di una radio-trasmittente) capace di emettere impulsi capaci a loro volta di innescare la ben nota reazione a catena in tutte le ogive nucleari attualmente esistenti in tutte le basi atomiche del mondo. Per costruire un apparecchio del genere dovreste indubbiamente aver risolto dei problemi scientifici d’una certa difficoltà... Ma se ci pensate un momento vi renderete conto che quelle difficoltà erano niente di fronte al problema che vi aspetta adesso (e che aspetta il protagonista di questo romanzo): quando e in che modo vi proponete di utilizzarlo, il vostro benefico apparecchio?

Contra todo pronóstico, los que se quedaron en Land han conseguido la inmunidad contra la pterthacosis, la enfermedad que forzó la emigración. Su ambicioso soberano reclama derechos sobre Overland, iniciando una guerra que amenaza la vida de los emigrantes. Toller Maraquine, el protagonista de la primera parte, es llamado para organizar una defensa desesperada al frente de una flota de satélites y aeronaves hechos de madera.

Nella cittadina americana di Whiteford una ragazza va in cucina a preparare il caffè lasciando il padre seduto nella sua poltrona. Quando ritorna dopo pochi minuti, la stanza è piena di fumo ma non c’è più incendio: ciò che è bruciato (dall’interno) e ridotto in finissima cenere, è soltanto suo padre. Si scopre allora che testimonianze più o meno credibili sul fenomeno del CUS (Combustione Umana Spontanea) si erano avute fin dall’antichità. E pochi giorni dopo, nella stessa cittadina — un secondo caso si verifica sotto gli occhi dello stesso scettico giornalista che sta indagando sul primo. L’“autocombustione umana” è ormai un fatto accertato. Resta solo da spiegare chi o che cosa “si nasconda” dietro il mostruoso fenomeno.

La profética visión de lo que podría ser un invento de estas características y la problemática social de su uso, desde el crimen casi perfecto hasta la verificación por parte de la justicia al cabo de cinco años— hacen de esta novela una obra maestra de ciencia ficción en el mas puro sentido de la palabra.
